Case Study: Custom Fog Cannon Skid Solution
Engineered for a Major Queensland Coal Operation
Overview
A major coal operation in Queensland required a mobile, autonomous dust suppression system capable of operating within a high-traffic Run-of-Mine (ROM) area. The solution needed to be fully self-sufficient, mine-spec compliant, and capable of activating automatically when trucks entered to tip material.
Standard trailer-mounted or fixed Fog Cannon systems could not meet the site’s combined operational, durability, and compliance requirements.
Dust-A-Side Australia, working in partnership with engineering specialists, developed a custom-engineered Fog Cannon skid solution designed specifically for harsh, high-dust mining environments.
The Challenge
The site required a dust suppression and dust prevention system that could:
- Operate in a heavy-duty ROM environment
- Activate automatically during tipping operations
- Run for extended periods without refilling
- Manage aggressive mine-site water
- Withstand extreme environmental conditions
- Be easily relocated using standard site equipment
- Operate independently of fixed power infrastructure
Traditional Fog Cannon setups were not sufficient for this application. The project demanded a fully engineered, industrial-grade solution.
The Engineered Solution
Working closely with DASA engineers, Dust-A-Side Australia designed and specified a complete skid-mounted Fog Cannon system incorporating:
Industrial-Grade Skid Construction
- High-strength steel skid frame
- Built for harsh, high-dust environments
- Engineered for durability, safety, and long service life
High-Capacity Water Storage
- Approx. 20,000L steel water tank
- Multi-hour runtime between refills
- Dual-side and end fill points for flexible site access
- Inspection hatch with optional bolt-on ladder
Robust Water Handling System
- Poly and stainless-steel pipework
- Heavy-duty filtration systems
- Designed to handle aggressive or poor-quality site water
- Reduced wear and maintenance requirements
Autonomous Power
- Integrated diesel generator
- Fully self-sufficient operation
- Suitable for remote, temporary, or unpowered locations
Mobility & Maintenance Design
- Compatible with dozers, graders, forklifts, and cranes
- Removable walkway mesh for service access
- Clear and organised cable and hose routing
- Optional LED flood lighting
- Radar activation capability for tipping zones
Project Outcome
To meet the site’s unique requirements, Dust-A-Side Australia provided a comprehensive suite of deliverables, including:
- Concept design
- Technical documentation
- Engineering specifications
- Budget pricing for purchase
- A 2-year rental option
The client confirmed their intention to proceed with the solution, recognising its value in:
- Improving dust control in the ROM area
- Enhancing workforce safety
- Reducing airborne dust exposure
- Supporting site compliance objectives
